This is a school teaching poster (1m X 50cm) used in French schools in the 1950s and 60s published by the Maison des Instituteurs in Saint Germain en Laye. It is entitled Les Insectes. On the other side, the poster is entitled Les Invertébrés. The artist/editor is J. Anscombe (I have not found any biographical details about him).
I bought it for a couple of Euros in a flea market a few years ago (though, apparently, if you look at prices on the Web, it is worth at least 50 Euros...). I think it is beautiful though it shows nightmarish creatures! You can spend hours looking at it, trying to learn the vocabulary. I have decorated my study at home with it.
Schoolchildren, in an age before Internet, must have liked studying these posters put up on the classroom walls (dozens were made); they really arouse curiosity, even make you dream, and were undoubtedly a useful teaching support for the teacher (used in a teaching method called "leçons de choses", i.e. object lessons).
